Insect friend - Honey bee

  • Kingdom : Animalia
  • Phylum : Arthropoda
  • Class : Insecta
  • Order : Hymenoptera
  • Family : Apidae
  • Scientific name : Apis mellifera
  • Common name : Honey bee

The most famous insect of the animal world is the Honeybee. This insect plays a key role in the natural as well as in the human world and hence it is called a social insect. Honey bees are dark brown in color with yellow bands on the abdomen. Their legs and eyes have hairs on them. To protect them from the predators they have a bright color pattern. Honeybees use their egg laying tube that is combined with a venom gland to create a stinger. It is also called Aculeus and is present at the end of the abdomen. This stinger is present only in female. Honey bees have large compound eyes made up of small simple eyes called ommatidia. Honeybees live in a nest called hives which can contain about 20,000 individuals. Honey bees work in a highly structural order. Each individual in the hive belong to any one of the three groups called castes. The three castes are Workers, Queens and Drones (males).

The nectar extracted from the pollen grains of the flower is the food for the bees. Bees produce honey by the nectar they collect. Once the honey is aged the bees seal the comb to prevent spoiling.

Snake

  • Kingdom : Animalia
  • Phylum : Chordata
  • Subphylum : Vertebrata
  • Class : Reptilia
  • Order : Squamata
  • Suborder : Serpentes
  • Scientific name : Ophidia
  • Common name : Snake

Snakes are carnivore's reptiles that are distinguished from legless lizards by the lack of eyelids and external ears. Snakes are ectothermic amniote vertebrates covered by scales. Snakes have loosely articulated skulls. Snakes have their paired organs arranged one in front of the other instead of side by side and have only one lung. Snakes are found in all parts of the world except in Antarctica. Snakes range in size 10 cm long to 7.6 m in length. Most of the snake species are non-venom. The venom ones use it to kill and pacify their prey rather use it for self defense. Some of the snakes have high venom that is just enough to kill a human. Snake locomotion is isolated and diverse from other animals. Snakes are exactingly carnivores. They eat lizards, birds, eggs, fish, snails, insects and other mammals. Snakes cannot bite their prey so they swallow their prey as a whole.
