Indian Pitta is a medium sized passerine bird. It is seen mostly in the sub Himalayas and in winters it is seen in southern India and Sri Lanka. Pittas are found in thick bushes and they are easily recognized by their voice.
Indian pitta has long and strong legs they have a very short tail and stout bill with colored crown stripe. They have thick black eye stripe and white throat and neck. The upper part of the bird is green in color and they have a blue tail. The lower part is bright red in color. The birds are seen in the ground to hunt their prey and it seems that they got in the traps that are meant for small animals. They fly to trees to rest.
Indian pitta feed on insects and small invertebrates that they found and pick up from the ground and leaf litter.
Parasites that cause avian malaria have been noticed in this species. |
